The $2 WWE® Scratch & Win game offers players a chance to win up to $20,000. Camelot Statement on the Government Announcement on The National Lottery Age of Play

UNITED KINGDOM (December 8, 2020)

A Camelot spokesperson said:

“We’ve said all along that we would fully support any decision made by the government to raise the minimum age to play. Now that a decision has been made to raise the age to 18 by October 2021, we’ll be doing everything we can to implement all of the changes that will be necessary as quickly as possible, while ensuring that we maintain the very high standards demanded of The National Lottery.

We’ve already started this work in preparation and, subject to receiving the appropriate licence variations and waivers from the Gambling Commission, we’re aiming to complete all of the changes that are needed in our online channels by early April 2021 and, in our retail channel, over the course of the summer – well in advance of the change in law.”

For background:

The National Lottery is a vast and complex operation, with a network of 44,000 independently owned retailers across the UK and more than 8.5 million active registered players, making it Europe’s largest online lottery in terms of sales.

With our operating licence requiring us to ensure that the minimum age to play appears on all physical materials, as well as in all online channels, the changeover will not happen overnight. This isn’t simply a case of sending new stickers to retailers or flicking an online switch.

In retail, for example, around 80 individual items need changing or removing – including fixed signage, permanent point of sale equipment, physical tickets and Scratchcards, and play slips.

And online, more than 50 separate areas need addressing – including Games Rules and Procedures, online Player Guides, app alerts and notifications, and automated emails.

On top of that, any COVID-19 restrictions will need to be taken into account to ensure that we implement the changes as safely and responsibly as possible.

SportCaller Scales New Heights in Retention with The Ladder for Virgin Bet

Free-to-play specialist unveils ingenious new football game to improve fan engagement for rising-star operator

DUBLIN, Ireland (December 4, 2020 – SportCaller, the leading free-to-play (FTP) sports-game provider, has rolled out a cutting-edge game, The Ladder, to instant acclaim and spikes in fan engagement for UK operator, Virgin Bet.

The game is the latest in an ongoing partnership between the pair, which began with the launch of LiveScore6 in early 2020. The Ladder is a live-quiz product, tailored exclusively to Virgin Bet’s thriving Sports base, which asks customers to test the strength of their football general knowledge and compete over 10 questions for a wide range of easily-attainable free bets or prizes which are awarded at the start of any given weekend.

In order to collect, players must submit their answers within a 10-second timeframe, as a live countdown clock unwinds for each question. However, true to the quiz’s easy-trigger nature, players can enjoy a helping hand from a series of Power-Ups which offer them valuable lifelines as they progress through the game. These unique features include Go 50-50 (taking away two multiple-choice answers), Free Pass (the answer is automatically provided) and Extra Time (extending the time permitted to submit an answer).

Lottery Insights December Issue

Incorrect participants slip down The Ladder for the day or week, while correct respondents are required to complete the full 10-question course to win their share of a big prize pool, or one of many other smaller free bets. The signature limited-time countdown, coupled to varied question-alternating functionality and a deep well of topical football data, guards against system-manipulation and improves the customer experience with its fun, intuitive gameplay.

SportCaller has also added live leaderboards, which update in real-time, allowing players to keep track of their performance and join in a daily battle for bragging rights against their friends or peers, thereby organically driving brand loyalty, repeat visits and core retention for Virgin Bet.

This general knowledge live-quiz format has proved particularly popular and versatile for operators and their players, not only during the lockdown but also as sports have returned. The pent-up passion among fans is palpable.

“Our array of games and mechanics now allow any client to offer a softer, and more accountable, means of keeping players engaged with their key products of interest. Arkansas Scholarship Lottery Claim Center Reopens Today

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (December 7, 2020) –Today, the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery (ASL) announced the reopening of its Claim Center located at 124 W. Capitol Ave. in Little Rock with limited staff. The facility was closed temporarily last Thursday due to a possible exposure to COVID-19.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we temporarily closed the Claim Center so it could be disinfected,” said Eric Hagler, ASL director.

“Some players have taken advantage of our mail-in claims program, which has always been available for player convenience, while others have been waiting for us to reopen,” Hagler said. “Since the Claim Center is reopened with limited staff, winners should anticipate the process taking longer than under normal conditions.”

Hagler reminded players that prizes of $500 and less can be redeemed at retailers.

The Claim Center is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. However, claims must be submitted no later than 4:15 p.m. Tickets are only sold on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Due to ongoing health concerns surrounding the pandemic, the ASL is continuing its additional safety precautions to ensure the health and well-being of the public and its employees.

  • Only one claimant at a time will be allowed in the Claim Center to honor proper social distancing.
  • Anyone entering the Claim Center must wear a mask/facial covering. To protect your safety, lottery employees handling claims will also be wearing masks.
  • In an effort to expedite the process, winners are encouraged to complete a claim form ahead of time and have all proper identification on-hand at the time of arrival. Claim forms will be available just outside the Claim Center door that winners must complete before entering.

Here is the process for mail-in claims:

  • Sign the back of the winning ticket.
  • Print and fill out a claim form that can be found at under “Claim Prize.”
  • Make a copy of a photo identification card (driver’s license, U.S. passport, passport issued by a foreign government, U.S. Armed Forces I.D., or U.S. Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services I.D.).
  • Mail the signed ticket, completed claim form and copy of the I.D. to Arkansas Scholarship Lottery, P.O. Box 3838, Little Rock, AR 72203.

The player will be mailed a check.

Government Launches Review to Ensure Gambling Laws Are Fit for Digital Age

The Culture Secretary has launched a major and wide-ranging review of gambling laws to ensure they are fit for the digital age as committed to in the manifesto.

From: Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, Nigel Huddleston MP, and The Rt Hon Oliver Dowden CBE MP

  • National Lottery minimum age raised to 18 to protect young people
  • Online stake limits, gambling advertising and age limits to be considered
  • Gambling Commission’s role and powers will also be looked at

LONDON, U.K. (December 8, 2020) -- Online restrictions, marketing and the powers of the Gambling Commission will be looked at as part of a call for evidence, to examine in detail how gambling has changed over the past 15 years.

Protections for online gamblers like stake and spend limits, advertising and promotional offers and whether extra protections for young adults are needed will all be explored.

The findings will be used to inform any changes to the Gambling Act 2005 to ensure customer protection is at the heart of the regulations, while giving those that gamble safely the freedom to do so.

The review will also look at evidence on the action customers can take where they feel operators have breached social responsibility requirements, such as intervening to protect customers showing clear signs of problematic play, and how to ensure children and young people are kept safe from gambling-related harm.

The Government recognises the need to balance the enjoyment people get from gambling with the right regulatory framework and protections.

It has also been announced today that the minimum age for playing the National Lottery will be raised from 16 to 18 from October 2021.

It follows a range of measures recently introduced by the Government to protect consumers from the risk of gambling-related harm. These include cutting the maximum stake on fixed odds betting terminals, bringing in tighter age and identity checks for online gambling, banning gambling using credit cards and expanding national specialist support through the NHS Long Term Plan.

In September the Government launched a call for evidence to explore young people’s experiences of loot boxes in video games. This will provide a clearer picture of the size of the loot box market in the UK and fully examine any evidence of harms or links to problem gambling.

The review of the Gambling Act 2005 will also consider the Gambling Commission’s powers and resources to ensure it can keep pace with the licensed sector and tackle the black market.

In October the Gambling Commission introduced new rules on VIP schemes, and has called for evidence around how to ensure operators identify and intervene where people are at risk of harm, including through carrying out affordability checks. The Commission will also soon set out new rules on safer game design for online slots and withdrawing winnings.

Alongside the launch of the review, the Government is announcing its decision to raise the minimum age to play the National Lottery from 16 to 18, to protect young people from gambling related harm.

Since it began in 1994 the National Lottery’s games portfolio has changed significantly and there has been a growing trend towards online play and instant win games like scratchcards. Following a consultation, from October 2021 it will be illegal to sell all National Lottery products to under 18s.

The Government is working with the Gambling Commission and Camelot to roll out the new age limit across the National Lottery products as quickly as possible and to ensure that it is in place by October. Under current plans, online sales to 16 and 17 year olds will stop in April 2021.

VISBY, Sweden (December 3, 2020) -- Follow the national handball team behind the scenes when Svenska Spel's Heja studio knocks on the door to the national team stars' hotel room. In the studio program, fans will get to know the Swedish European Championship squad a little closer when they are taken into the bubble at the player hotel in Silkeborg.

But not everything is as it used to be. Even before the training matches against Hungary last week, the national team went into its bubble and since then the players have not met anyone outside the squad. In Denmark, players will spend virtually all of their time outside of training and matches in their hotel rooms.

Now Svenska Spel gives all the country's handball fans a unique opportunity to follow into the European Championship bubble. In the studio program "Svenska Spels Heja-studio - inside handball national team", viewers will be offered unique material from inside the players' hotel rooms.

“It will be fun to bring the fans into the bubble and I hope that they will get to know us players a little better. We will definitely show sides of us that perhaps not many people know about,” says Filippa Idéhn who together with Anna Lagerquist is the first to open the door to the hotel room.

“We will get to know the national team stars on a more personal level and take part in their preparations for the matches. The players' hotel rooms are really as close to their home as you can get and it is an environment that no Swedish handball fans have previously had access to. But now the players open the hotel room door and offer fans a unique insight into their lives in the European Championship bubble,” says Stina Packalén, sponsorship project manager at handball's main sponsor Svenska Spel.

Interact with the players

The program will be broadcast live in the handball national team's app Gameday and in Svenska Spel's social media on the days when the team does not play a match. Chat and polls will be open so viewers can interact live with the players.

During the broadcasts, other interesting guests will also appear.

The first episode of Svenska Spel's cheer studio - inside the national handball team will be broadcast on Friday 4 December at 12.00.

Instant Win Gaming and the Virginia Lottery Launch Industry-First Progressive Jackpot Enabled e-Instant Games

U.K. (December 3, 2020) – Instant Win Gaming (IWG), the leading supplier of digital e-Instant games to NASPL/WLA-member lotteries, congratulates the Virginia Lottery for being the first in the U.S. to launch progressive jackpot enabled e-Instant games.

IWG’s progressive jackpot module combines the digital entertainment of e-Instant games with the proven excitement of jackpot-style prizing commonly associated with lottery draw games, marking a significant step forward for the iLottery category.

Jungle Tumble Jackpots, the first game title to feature IWG’s progressive jackpot technology, is now available to iLottery players across Virginia.

The base game of Jungle Tumble Jackpots features the company’s popular symbol cluster mechanic, and incorporates three in-game, instant-win jackpot prizes: a mini jackpot expected to be awarded multiple times each day, a mid-tier jackpot expected to be awarded weekly, and a top-prize jackpot expected to be awarded once per month. Actual frequency will depend on the volume of play.

IWG purposely engineered its progressive jackpot module to be 100% self-contained within its Remote Game Server (RGS).

This means the Virginia Lottery can launch progressive jackpot enabled games through the same processes applied to launching standard e-Instant games.

No technical support of any kind is required from its iLottery platform provider, NeoPollard Interactive.

This latest innovation builds on the partnership between the Virginia Lottery and IWG, with the supplier’s content delivering a series of record-breaking game launches for the lottery since going live in August 2020.

Virginia Lottery Executive Director Kevin Hall said, “We just launched our iLottery program in July and we are already breaking new ground for our industry with the launch of IWG’s progressive jackpot enabled games.

This is testimony to the fast pace at which internet channels must evolve in order to keep pace with consumer expectations.”

The modularity of IWG’s RGS allows for rapid innovation. Launching brand new game technologies without orchestrating the work across multiple technology partners is critical to lotteries competing in the fast-paced digital world.

IWG CEO Rhydian Fisher said, “The fact that the Virginia Lottery is the most recent iLottery launch in the U.S. and is now the first to offer progressive jackpots on e-Instant games, is a very impressive feat and speaks volumes to how they’ve structured their iLottery program to achieve record-setting results.

The launch of progressive jackpot enabled games with Virginia Lottery is an important milestone for the iLottery sector, and we’re confident that it will be very popular with players.

“The key to our progressive jackpot functionality is that it’s controlled completely within our RGS.

We’re thrilled that the team at Virginia Lottery identified this as a key benefit, allowing them to offer progressive jackpots without additional integration at the platform level.

We’re looking forward to delivering progressive jackpots, along with other innovations, to more lotteries across North America in the coming months.”

Minister Announces the Commencement of the Gaming and Lotteries (Amendment) Act 2019

From Department of Justice

DUBLIN, Ireland (December 2, 2020)

  • this Act modernises the promotion of gaming and lotteries
  • egislation also standardises the minimum gambling age at 18 years
  • will act as an interim reform measure pending the comprehensive reform of gambling in Ireland

The Minister of State with special responsibility for gambling regulation, James Browne TD, has today announced that the Gaming and Lotteries (Amendment) Act 2019 will come into effect on 1 December 2020.

This fulfils the commitment made when the legislation was enacted.

Making the announcement, Minister Browne said:

"This Act modernises the Gaming and Lotteries Act 1956 and will help the better promotion of local gaming and lottery activity.

These activities, held primarily for charitable and philanthropic purposes, are the lifeblood of our sporting clubs and community organisations across the country.

"Many of these clubs and organisations have had their fundraising efforts hit hard by the pandemic.

With Christmas approaching, some will already be planning local end of year raffles and draws for small prizes.

I want to assure you that these changes I am announcing today will not impede your efforts."

The main purposes of the 2019 Act are to:

  • streamline and modernise the application process for gaming permits and lottery permits and licences for smaller scale, local gaming and lottery activity
  • protect underage people by standardising the minimum age for all licensed gambling at 18 years of age, including for betting on the Tote
  • ensure more proceeds from lotteries goes to charitable causes
  • update the stake and prize limits for licensed gaming machines, with a provision for the Minister to amend the amounts by regulation
  • serve an important public interest in assisting the better promotion of gaming and lotteries and enhance consumer protection

The 2019 Act is an interim reform measure pending the comprehensive reform of gambling in Ireland. The government is committed to the modernisation of our licensing and regulatory environment for gambling.

A new independent gambling regulator will enforce appropriate licensing and regulatory measures in respect of all gambling activities, including online.

Referring to the Programme for Government commitment, Minister Browne said:

"Gambling is a large and evolving industry. It must be the subject of a modern, sensible and effective licensing and regulatory approach.

My department is now engaged in the drafting of a General Scheme of a new Bill to provide for that comprehensive reform.

"I was also pleased to secure “seed funding” of €200,000 for the new Regulator as part of the Justice allocation in Budget 2021."

Permits and licences already issued under the provisions of the 1956 Act will remain in force until their next renewal date.

If that date is after 1 December 2020, the new provisions will apply. All necessary arrangements will be in place to support the commencement of the Act including:

  • application Forms for Gaming permits and Lottery Permits from An Garda Síochána
  • new registers of permits and licences issued by An Garda Síochána, the District Court and the Revenue Commissioners
  • rules of the District Court
