WLA Quarterly Lottery Sales Indicator
Full year global lottery
sales up by 9.9%; growth driven again by Latin America and Asia
BASEL, Switzerland (April 3, 2015)
-- In 2014, full-year on full-year global lottery sales grew 9.9%,
strengthening from 2013 full-year on full-year growth of 4.9%. The growth in
worldwide lottery sales was once again built on the foundations of strong
performances from the Asia Pacific and Latin American regions, with both these
locales having recorded unbroken double-digit growth in sales over the past six
quarters. The robust performance of the Asia Pacific and Latin American markets
was tempered, however, by the performance of the North American region, which
saw full-year on full-year sales tread water in 2014. For their part, the
European and African markets recorded mild year-on-year gains for 2014. The
improvement in sales globally in 2014, together with the recent upturn in the
economy in the United States, paints a more promising picture for global growth
than has been occasioned in the past two years. Indeed, the pickup in global
growth suggests we may be returning to the heights of 2011, the best year for
global lottery sales in recent memory.
The Latin American market
performed most strongly in 2014, with participating Latin American
lotteries reporting an aggregate full-year on full-year increase in sales of
23.2%. Growth in Latin America was once again driven by Argentina's
Lotería Nacional Sociedad del Estado, which reported a full-year on
full-year increase in sales of 26.8%.
Brazil's Caixa Econômica
Federal also performed robustly, recording a twelve-month on twelve-month
increase in sales of 18.5%. In contrast, Chile's Polla Chilena and Mexico's
Lotería National para la Asistencia Pública both had a quieter

region also saw strong growth, with participating Asia Pacific
lotteries witnessing an aggregate full-year on full-year increase in sales of
15.6%. Continuing an ongoing theme, the engine of growth in the Asia Pacific
region was the participating mainland Chinese lotteries. Building on the growth
in sales occasioned by the 20th FIFA World Cup, held in Brazil from June 12 to
July 13, 2014, the China Sports Lottery recorded a full-year on full-year
increase in sales of 32.8%, while the China Welfare lottery reported a
twelve-month on twelve-month increase in sales of 16.7% for its part. With
sales in excess of EUR 30 billion (USD 32.2 billion) over the past twelve
months, the China Welfare lottery is now the world's largest lottery by
annualized sales volume, eclipsing Italy's Lottomatica, which falls back into
second place, just ahead of the China Sports Lottery. Elsewhere in the Asia
Pacific region, Australia's Lotterywest held steady with an FY on FY increase
in sales of 1.8%, while Japan's Takara-kuji lottery saw its sales dip slightly
over the same timeframe.
In Europe, lottery sales picked up
in 2014, with participating European lotteries recording an aggregate full-year
on full-year increase sales of 5.1%. With Eurostat reporting that GDP rose over
FY 2014 by 0.9% across the euro area (EA18 countries) and rising by 1.4% across
the EU28 countries in the same timeframe, the economic environment eased
slightly for Europe's lotteries. Lotteries in Eastern and Central Europe fared
best, with sales at Hungary's Szerencsejáték Zrt. increasing by
24.8% year-on-year and sales at the Czech Republic's SAZKA a.s. growing by
15.2% over the same period.
In Greece, sales at OPAP continued
to rebound, with twelve-month on twelve-month revenues up 14.8%. This marked
the sixth consecutive quarter of growth in sales at OPAP, defying the ongoing
economic turmoil in Greece. Poland's Totalizator Sportowy also had a positive
2014, recording an FY on FY increase in sales of 6.7%. Elsewhere in Europe,
Finland's Veikkaus Oy, Italy's Lottomatica, and France's Francaise des Jeux all
reported full-year on full-year increases in sales in the region of 5%. In
contrast, sales at the participating Spanish lotteries fell slightly over the

saw modest gains in 2014, with participating African lotteries recording an
aggregate increase in full-year on full-year sales of 3.8%. Ghana's National
Lottery Authority saw full-year sales increase by 21% across the board in 2014,
as against full-year sales for 2013. Morocco's La Marocaine des Jeux also
continued to perform strongly, recording a twelve-month on twelve-month
increase in sales of 11.9%. The Mauritian National Lottery also fared
positively, seeing its sales increase by 6.6% year-on-year. In contrast,
full-year sales at South Africa's Gidani and Morocco's Loterie Nationale dipped
slightly in 2014, as compared to full-year sales for 2013.
The North American
region held steady in 2014, with participating North American
lotteries posting an aggregate full-year on full-year increase in sales of
0.4%. This, despite the improving U.S. economy, which saw real GDP rising by
2.4% for 2014 (as against 2013) - the best full-year growth recorded by the
U.S. since 2010. The standout performer in the North American region was once
again the California Lottery, which boasted a full-year on full-year increase
in sales of 6%. Elsewhere in North America, full-year on full-year sales at
participating lotteries either held steady, or ventured into negative
territory. One possible explanation for the sluggish growth in sales in North
America - the improving U.S. economy notwithstanding - might lie in the
performance of the U.S. multi-jurisdictional Powerball game, which saw its
full-year on full-year sales decline by 19%; this, despite the game's recent
introduction in California.
A comparative lack of big Powerball
jackpots in 2014 (where only one Powerball jackpot over USD 400 million was
recorded), coupled with possible jackpot fatigue, may have contributed to the
block game's comparatively lackluster performance over the given timeframe.
The close of 2014 marks the fifth
year the WLA has been reporting
on quarterly sales growth in the world lottery community. Over this time,
global growth in lottery sales has ranged from an annual high of 13.1% (2011)
to an annual low of 4.9% (2013), averaging out at a very respectable 8.3% per
annum, in what have been largely challenging economic circumstances worldwide.
The continued growth of our industry, even in difficult economic climes, is a
testament both to the commitment of the professionals whose work powers this
industry, and to the public's ongoing desire to play fun, entertaining, and
socially responsible games that contribute to good causes. New benchmarks
continue to be set: Q4 2014 marked the first time in which global lottery
sales, as recorded by the lotteries participating in the WLA Quarterly Lottery
Sales Indicator (WLA QLSI), saw sales of over EUR 50 billion (USD 53.7 billion)
in a quarter.
The WLA will continue to track the
progress of global lottery sales in future editions of the WLA QLSI. Going
forward, the aim of the WLA QLSI remains unchanged: to provide, via aggregating
and reporting upon quarterly sales data from WLA member lottery organizations,
a barometer for enabling lottery professionals to gauge the overall climate of
the lottery industry globally and by region. Once again we thank all WLA member

-- The Tennessee Education
Lottery Corporation announced today that it had sold more than $10 billion
in instant tickets since the Lottery's inception, reaching that mark in March,
or just over 11 years, a faster pace than all but one other U.S. lottery
Instant ticket sales for March of
this year hit $115.8 million, the highest for any month since inception,
eclipsing by one million dollars the previous record set in March 2014.
"We take great care to develop
innovative and entertaining instant games for our players," said Rebecca
Hargrove, President and CEO of the Tennessee Education Lottery Corporation.
"Combined with an effective distribution system and continual focus on the
retailer network, our program of instant tickets has been highly successful,
propelling our Lottery to 11 consecutive years of record growth. The upshot, of
course, is that this success has allowed us to raise a remarkable sum of money
for vital education programs in Tennessee.".
According to data provided by
Corporation, a leading international supplier of lottery goods and
services, 16 of the 47 U.S. lotteries have surpassed $10 billion in instant
ticket sales, but only Texas did so in less time than Tennessee. Texas took
seven years to reach that point. Others in the top five include, Georgia,
hitting the $10 billion mark in 13 years of sales; California in 14 years; and
Florida in 17 years.

Casinos Austria and Austrian Lotteries Report Top Results in
VIENNA, Austria (April 8, 2015) --
Marked growth in the casino, lottery games and VLT sectors brings record sales
of 3.62 billion euros; massive increase in earnings to 41.7 million euros.
There were plenty of reasons to
celebrate at the Casinos Austria and Austrian Lotteries Group in the 2014
business year. All companies in the Group - Casinos Austria, Austrian
Lotteries, Casinos Austria International and the Entertainment subsidiary which
handles the group's online, video lottery terminals and sports betting
activities - posted increased sales compared to 2013 and thus contributed to
raising the Group's consolidated sales to a record 3.62 billion euros.
This corresponds to a rise of 3.34
percent year-on-year. The group paid out a total of 2.43 billion euros in prize
money and winnings in 2014 - the largest amount in its long and successful
history. With total tax payments of 552 million euros, the group also once
again confirmed its role as one of the top five taxpayers in Austria. Great
performance in its domestic business and further restructuring successes in its
international business led to operating results almost doubling to 62.8 million
euros, and group earnings rocketing to a gratifying 41.7 million euros.
Chairman Karl Stoss summed up the
year in a correspondingly positive tone: "We introduced many measures,
launched new products and further increased our efficiency. Strengthened by
these extremely gratifying results, we can now continue to work with full force
on the future of this great group of companies."
At Casinos Austria in particular,
2014 was a very eventful year on many counts. With total investments in the
double digit millions, the company refurbished its casinos in Bregenz, Velden,
Salzburg and Vienna, giving each of them a brand new look that caters to the
demands of contemporary guests.
The eight casino restaurants
operated by Casinos Austria flourished under the new Cuisino food and beverage
(F&B) brand, and the launch of Double Roulette introduced a new variation
of the game in which small bets offer the chance to win up to 1,200 times the
amount bet. Guests acknowledged all these measures and flocked in increasing
numbers to the 12 Austrian casinos, which welcomed a total of 2,504,422 guests
in 2014, a rise of 6 percent year-on-year. Revenues were up by 3.2 percent to
271 million euros, generated in equal measure from rising gaming revenues and a
healthy plus at the Cuisino F&B subsidiary.
Following on from its excellent
results in the previous year, Austrian Lotteries raised its sales figures once
again in 2014 - this time by 3.3 percent to an all-time high of more than 3.15
billion euros (including win2day and WINWIN). This can be attributed in part to
the extremely gratifying results at the WINWIN Video Lottery Terminals (VLT)
subsidiary, where total sales for the year were up by 15.1 percent to some 635
million euros (2013: 551 million euros).
Innovative new forms of playing the
lottery, like the TeamTipp (literally: "team numbers") and Anteilsschein
(literally: "share ticket") brought a strong increase in sales for the Lotto "6
aus 45" national lottery product to 586 million euros (+2.4 percent) and a rise
in EuroMillions lottery sales to 340 million euros (+5.4 percent). Last, but by
no means least, the Rubbellos scratch-off lottery product successfully
continued its multi-game strategy, introduced a number of new games - including
two for mobile phones and tablets - thereby raising its sales for the year to
128 million euros, an increase of 7 percent compared to the previous year.
There was also good news to report
from Casinos Austria International (CAI). CAI succeeded in raising its revenues
by 1 percent year-on-year to 139.1 million euro, a significant achievement
given the stagnating and in some areas even clear downturn in the international
casino sector. The restructuring measures introduced continued to prove their
worth and contributed to further enhancing the earnings and revenues situation:
all CAI operations further improved their operating performance in 2014,
resulting in an operating profit of 866,000 euros.
Operating profits of 57.69 million
euros (compared to 44.4 million euros in the previous year) at Austrian
Lotteries and 8.9 million euros in operating profits from the 12 Austrian
casinos ultimately led to gratifying consolidated group profits of 41.7 million
euros. The group once again also lived up to its name as one of Austria's
biggest taxpayers: a total of 552 million euros in taxes and duties were paid
to the Ministry of Finance in 2014, an increase of 4.2 percent compared to the
previous year. Furthermore, the group also once again confirmed its reputation
as one of the country's most eminent sponsors of social causes, the arts,
culture, sport and tourism.
The group also further strengthened
its leading role in the field of responsible gaming and player protection in
2014: Austrian Lotteries has successfully undergone recurring responsible
gaming audits by the European Lottery Association and the World Lottery
Association since 2009. At the start of 2014, Casinos Austria's responsible
gaming management system was also certified by the European Casino Association.
This makes the Casinos Austria and Austrian Lotteries Group one of the first
fully certified gaming groups worldwide.

Clarification on Announcement Regarding Online Lottery Sales in

MIDDLETON, Pennsylvania (April 6,
2015) -- On Tuesday, April 7, the
Pennsylvania Lottery will
begin sales of Cash4LifeT, a new $2 terminal-based game offering a top prize of
$1,000 a day for life and a second prize of $1,000 a week for life.
The game is currently sold in New
Jersey and New York. Drawings are held each Monday and Thursday at 9 p.m.
Cash4Life players get to
dream about what it would feel like to wake up to an extra $1,000 in their
pocket, each and every day, for the rest of their lives, said Lottery
Executive Director Drew Svitko. If a top-prize winner opts to take the
cash instead, they will receive a one-time payment of $7 million.
To play Cash4Life, players choose
