ROME, (ITALY) and PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND (U.S.), (Nov. 21, 2014) -- GTECH S.p.A. announced that its subsidiary GTECH Corporation (GTECH) has been awarded a seven-year integrated services contract to provide a new central gaming system, a variety of lottery/self-service machines, multimedia displays, an upgraded telecommunications network, and related ongoing services to the Missouri Lottery.

The new contract, which is scheduled to run for seven years beginning in the second half of 2015, is the result of a competitive procurement, and includes one three-year extension option, exercisable at the Lottery's discretion. GTECH expects to receive revenues of approximately $112 million over the seven-year term.

Over the past 23 years, GTECH’s flexible technology solutions and marketing insights have supported the Missouri Lottery’s innovative approaches and multi-faceted portfolio,” said

GTECH Americas President and CEO Jaymin B. Patel. “Through this agreement, our robust, forward-thinking solutions will help to ensure that the Lottery continues to grow and raise funds for good causes.”

Doing business in China: Five Points of corporate etiquette

Article for the Benefit of LI Readers, by Carly Mae Penworthy - Global Marketing Executive at Geonomics

Carly Mae Penworthy is Global Marketing Executive at Geonomics

LONDON, UK (November 27, 2014) -- Wherever you are in the world, business people will have different ways they go about working. As the lottery industry grows and globalises, this creates exciting, dynamic opportunities as well as the potential for mishap. In the interests of helping you avoid such pitfalls, I want to share some of the tips I’ve discovered from my experiences of working in Asia with Geonomics.

1.  Red isn’t a lucky colour all the time

We’ve all heard that red is a lucky colour in China, but there are exceptions to the rule. Names, for instance, should never be written in red. This is because traditionally the names of the deceased were painted in red on their gravestones. Therefore, if you write a business associate’s name in red, the more traditional may think you’re wishing ill upon them.

2.  Avoid the aggressive handshake

A strong handshake is often thought of as a sign of professionalism and competency, but in China this isn’t the case. Those “squeezing” contests that are so common at conferences in the West won’t impress in Asia. There, handshakes last far longer. This might seem uncomfortable at first, but don’t be shy about holding on if your counterpart is enjoying the contact – it’s just cementing a good business relationship.

3. Beware of the business card

Business cards are exchanged for a multitude of reasons in China, even in more casual circumstances. This means that business cards are ubiquitous, and that you should think carefully about having professional, up-to-date cards ready your trip.

There is also a ritual to follow when handing over your business card. Always offer or receive a card with both hands, and remember to look at the card before storing it away in your wallet or purse. Treat the card itself with respect, too: it’s vitally important not to write on it or shove it away hastily. And above all, never place a business card in your back pocket.

4.  Don’t try to split the bill

We all know the feeling: after a lovely meal, the bill arrives and there’s an awkward scramble to ascertain who will be paying, or how to split the amount owed. In China, this simply doesn’t happen; the host will always pay. Therefore never attempt to settle the bill when you’ve been invited to dine with a business associate, and be prepared to pay for everyone if you have organised the meal.

5.  Keep it formal

In a world of dress-down Fridays, we are used to the business world and our interactions within it becoming increasingly casual. However in China, formality is very important. Avoid coming across as overly relaxed, both in your demeanour and how you dress. And in business situations such as meetings, remember a few key rules of etiquette. Find out who the most senior person in the room is, and address this person first. Then when speaking to your counterparts, refer to them by their job title, rather than their name (for example, Chairman or Vice President). Likewise, use nin – the polite “you” in Mandarin – when you’re addressing your elders. And finally, understand the format of Chinese introductions and the respect this shows for institutions: first your business contacts will refer to their company, then their job title and finally their name.

This may seem like a lot to remember, but making an effort is paramount to impressing overseas business contacts and cementing a good working relationship. As someone brought up in another culture, your attempts to learn about and follow Chinese customs will show you in a very positive light to potential business contacts – which will stand your organisation in great stead for developing partnerships in the future.

Guide to Gambling Advertising Codes

UNITED KINGDOM (November 2014) -- The Gambling (Licensing and Advertising) Act 2014 requires that only gambling operators licensed by the Gambling Commission (the Commission) are permitted to advertise to consumers in Great Britain or provide them with remote gambling facilities.

This simplifies the position for carriers of advertising. Carriers of gambling advertising will need to ensure they only permit gambling operators licensed by the Commission to advertise in Great Britain.

Licensed operators who offer online gambling are required to display a link (on all web pages that are used to access gambling) to their licensed status with the Commission so consumers can quickly verify that the operator has a licence.

Consumers and carriers of advertising can also check whether operators have a licence by accessing the Commission’s register of licensed operators.

It is a requirement of the Commission’s Licence conditions and codes of practice (LCCP) that gambling operators wishing to advertise must comply with the advertising codes of practice which apply to the form and media in which they advertise their gambling facilities or services.

The Committees of Advertising Practice (CAP) write and maintain the UK Advertising Codes which are administered by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

Lottery Names Apparent Successful Offeror for I-Lottery Services

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (November 24, 2014) -- The Kentucky Lottery Corporation's (KLC's) board of directors on Friday approved GTECH S.p.A. as the apparent successful offeror to provide iLottery services and games in Kentucky. The action followed an extensive competitive bid process, and will allow contract negotiations to begin.

The KLC hopes to have the iLottery platform ready to launch by later in calendar year 2015. "As a business, we have to continue to change and evolve to meet the demands of our players and to stay competitive in the entertainment marketplace,” said the KLC's President and CEO Arch Gleason. "Many consumers today want to do business online, and we view this as a different channel to offer our games to new customers. It’s vital we stay up to date with our products, as students across the Commonwealth depend on us for scholarship and grant proceeds."

"We really don't see this as competition for our existing brick-and-mortar retailers," said Gleason. "In states where Internet sales are currently underway, the amount of these new sales have been small, yet at the same time traditional brick-and-mortar retailers have seen their lottery business continue to grow. This has also been the experience for European and UK lotteries, which have been selling lottery products online for more than a decade. We expect this to be the same case in Kentucky, and are looking at ways that would potentially involve traditional retailers in the program."

Gleason also said no decision has been made as to which lottery products will be available at launch. “Our product launch plans will be set through discussions with GTECH in the coming months,” said Gleason.

According to Vice President of Finance Rick Kelley, sales for FY15 thru October were $287 million, which is $13.5 million more than the same period in FY14 but $8.2 million below budget. Scratch-off ticket sales showed the most growth, surging $11.2 million ahead of the same period last year with $178 million in sales. Draw game sales however dropped $12 million from the same period last year with $94.8 million in sales. Keno, which first went on sale in November 2013, has seen $14.2 million in sales. This is $2.9 million below budget.

Schafer Systems Inc.

Executive Vice President and CFO Howard Kline reported draw game sales have definitely been hurt by the lack of large jackpot runs in the Powerball game. "Powerball is currently down 41.3% or $14.1 million from last year," Kline said. "The game has not

hit its sales target for a single week this year, and it’s our most profitable product. Powerball sales as a whole are down 49% across the industry."

In other business, the board approved rules and regulations for 13 scratch-off tickets and one draw game.

The next meeting of the KLC’s board of directors will be January 23 2015. The meeting will begin at 9:30 AM EST, and will be held at the KLC headquarters at 1011 West Main Street in Louisville. Committee meetings will begin at 8:30 AM EST.

Statement on claims suggesting the State will be at a Loss due to State Treaty on Gambling.

KIEL, Germany (November 19, 2014) -- The media coverage that Schleswig-Holstein in 2015, will lose an additional 60 million euros from occupying the gambling tax, is wrong. In the proposed amendments to the State Government on the draft budget 2015 (so-called. Nachschiebeliste) amount taken into account is an adjustment of payment from the settlement process between countries for the sports betting tax.

"The German Tax Law is very complex, sometimes it’s necessary to read deeper into the matter, "said Finance Minister Monika Heinold.

The Schleswig-Holstein Act on the Restructuring of gambling from 20.10.2011 was in the field of sports betting replaced by a federal law amending the Betting and Lotteries Act on 29.06. 2012.

For the sports betting tax was introduced on 01.07.2012 nationwide. Linked to this was a change of responsibilities:

Responsible for the execution of the sports betting tax under the Betting and Lotteries Act were by the end of 2013, a tax office in Schleswig-Holstein and one in Hesse. As of 2014, this is only responsible for the account between the states of Hesse, Hamburg is responsible.

Schleswig-Holstein had from the sports betting tax in 2012 and 2013, a relatively high volume. This is followed by the decomposition amounts to be paid and prepayment amounts calculated for the following years. As a result, Schleswig-Holstein has in 2014, a negative volume of about 104 million euros. 2015 parts thereof shall be reimbursed by the other countries after settlement of the decomposition.

This reimbursement was taken by the state government in connection with the tax assessment taking into account the fiscal equalization in the proposed amendments to the draft budget for 2015. The Treasury expects recoveries totalling about 60 million euros. However, owing to the inclusion in the financial equalization, these revenues reduce the balance on a seven-figure sum.

Lotterywest Doing Great Things in West Australia

Premier opens refurbished Wanslea - listed on the State Register of Heritage Places

Cancer Wellness Centre completed with Lotterywest grants of more than $8m

PERTH, West Australia (November 14, 2014) -- Premier Colin Barnett today officially opened the refurbished Wanslea in Cottesloe, now home to a unique support centre for West Australians affected by cancer.

Using more than $8 million in Lotterywest grants, the heritage-listed building has undergone extensive refurbishment to become the Cancer Wellness Centre with four cancer support organisations offering information and support from a central location.

"The redevelopment of Wanslea was a significant conservation project which has also highlighted the potential to adapt heritage projects for use as community facilities," Mr Barnett said.

"The conservation and re-use of this beautiful building has not only taken it back to its former glory but also restored Wanslea to the original purpose of caring for West Australians."

Wanslea was built as an orphanage in 1905. Throughout its history, the building has been used by various organisations including the Red Cross to nurse returned service personnel and by the State Government as a home for the children of sick mothers.

The Premier also acknowledged the scale of the work undertaken in the refurbishment project and the benefit to the wider community.

Breast Cancer Care WA, Melanoma WA, Cancer Support WA and the Brady Support Cancer Foundation are now located in the refurbished centre, allowing the organisations to share ideas, resources and programs to benefit clients.

Mr Barnett said cancer was a leading cause of death in Australia and many West Australians needed cancer support services while they were receiving medical treatment.

"The Cancer Wellness Centre will offer a unique integrated cancer support campus, conveniently drawing together the services and expertise into one place to provide cancer support, learning and prevention," he said.
