Jumbo Interactive Half Yearly Report

  • Results Ahead Of Guidance Due To A Strong Run Of Australian Jackpots In December
  • Germany Now Live And Making A Contribution In HY2
  • Strong Balance Sheet And Cash Position
  • 1.5c Dividend Declared

BRISBANE, Queensland Australia (February 24, 2014) – Leading interactive lottery business, Jumbo Interactive (ASX:JIN), is pleased to announce continued robust trading with a strong run of Australian jackpots in December 2013 pushing results above forecasts.

The trading robustness can be seen clearly when comparing results with a number of half-year periods and not just the December 2012 half which included the record $112 million OzLotto jackpot on Melbourne Cup day in 2012”, said Mr Mike Veverka, CEO of Jumbo Interactive.

Furthermore, the bulk of ticket sales for the $30 million New Year’s Eve Megadraw will be booked in the second half rather than the current half year period with the draw taking place on 4 January, 2014.

The balance sheet strengthened with Net Assets rising from $20.5 million at 30 June 2013 to $21.9 million at 31 December 2013 despite international expansion expenses in Germany and North America. The Company’s cash position also remains strong at $25.1 million at 31 December 2013 ($16.9 million net cash plus $8.2 million players’ funds).

Jumbo’s Australian customer database grew from 1.52 to 1.64 million accounts over 12 months due to interactive marketing efforts designed to complement the efforts of, Jumbo’s primary lottery partner in Australia.

Jumbo focuses on customer acquisition from areas that complement the efforts of and increases overall marketing reach”, said Mr Veverka.

In addition, unique campaigns designed to increase customer retention and reinvigoration of established players resulted in the good result”, said Mr Veverka.

Germany Goes Live

Jumbo’s new lottery website in Germany, is live and has begun taking orders. Marketing campaigns have commenced and will continue to escalate throughout 2014 to build the customer database.

I expect the percentage growth in Germany to outpace that of Australia due to the larger market size and it’s earlier stage in the growth cycle”, said Mr Veverka.

The $11 billion German lottery market is almost twice the size of the Australian market however internet penetration is less 1% of overall sales compared to 9% in Australia.

Financial Performance

During the period, Jumbo spent $1.1 million on international expansion coinciding with the Company being awarded licenses in all 16 German states. In addition to Germany, positive signs are emerging from other European and North American markets. Below is a summary of the financial results, including a like-for-like comparison for better trend analysis.

These expenses relate to general marketing costs to find target jurisdictions as well as increased employee costs and establishment costs in jurisdictions that have been signed. To date, the Company has been successful in expanding into Germany, launching late December 2013, and has plans to enter more international markets in the future. The planned launch in Mexico is still pending.

All these expenses have been fully recognised in the Group’s consolidated profit and loss and funded from operating cash flows with significant payback opportunities expected in the years ahead.

Previously, customer acquisition costs were capitalized and amortised over an 18 month period. From 1 July 2012, these costs are expensed as they are incurred. The amortisation charge in the 2013 and 2012 half-year periods on capitalised costs prior to 1 July 2012 have been added back for like-to-like comparative purposes. This changed treatment does not affect Net Cash Flows and reduces the variance between reported Net Profit After Tax and Operating Cash Flows.

Proposed interim fully franked ordinary dividend of 1.5 (one and a half) cents per share with a franking percentage of 100% (2012: 100%) as follows:

  • Record date: 14 March 2014
  • Payment date: 28 March 2014

The Dividend Reinvestment Plan will be suspended for the proposed interim fully franked dividend.

The board intends to maintain a minimum of 3.0 (three) cents per share per annum dividend during the Company’s international expansion phase in recognition of the strong balance sheet and cash positions.

About Jumbo Interactive

Jumbo Interactive Limited is listed in Australia (ASX:JIN) as well as the German Frankfurt, Berlin and Stuttgart exchanges (Symbol: JUB).

In 2000, the Company sold its first lottery ticket on the internet and since then has developed into a popular site for lotteries to be played.

Jumbo has proven its ability to open up new lottery markets with its innovative technology and internet marketing initiatives that have brought lotteries to new demographics via the internet.

Jumbo is now also active in the European lottery market with its first licensed operation servicing the $11 billion German lottery market.

Alchemy3 Introduces NEW WAYS to Love Lucy!

ATLANTA, Georgia (February 24, 2014) -- Alchemy3 announced today that they are the exclusive representative for the I Love Lucy brand.  The Iconic 1950’s show was first introduced to the Lottery industry by Alchemy3’s founders in the mid 1990s.

Over the last 20 years, many Lotteries have run I Love Lucy games--some repeatedly,--with strong sales results.  “Not only does Lucy deliver on sales, but the property also provides lotteries with the opportunity to create exciting publicity and event extensions” said Jeffrey Schweig, President of Alchemy3.

While I Love Lucy has been a part of pop culture for over 50 years, it continues to appeal to new generations of consumers. The show has remained in syndication since its inception and Millenials are just as intrigued as their Baby Boomer counterparts.

The show’s principles are timeless with comedy, laughter, love and friendship which everyone identifies with. There was something inside of them that’s inside of all of us.” said Desi Arnaz, Jr., son of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.

Alchemy3 has done a thorough creative exploration of the Lucy brand including new instant ticket concepts, innovative mobile apps and draw game promotions. There are also exclusive opportunities for Lotteries to partner with the new on-stage version of the classic TV show called “I Love Lucy Live On Stage”.

Building on the successful release of the colorized version of the Christmas special last year, which drew over 8.7 million viewers, with more colorized episodes to follow, we have brought the same color vibrancy to our Lucy themed products and promotions.  We look forward to sharing these new ways to love Lucy with our Lottery customers” Schweig concluded.

BOSTON, Massachusetts (February 14, 2014) -- Treasurer Steven Grossman today appointed Beth Bresnahan as the Executive Director of the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission, drawing on the management and marketing expertise that has led to record-breaking profits at the Lottery in recent years. “Beth is driven by results, and her strategic marketing approach has been a boon to the cities and towns that depend on Lottery profits for unrestricted local aid,” said Grossman. “Her innovative management style is one of the main reasons that the Lottery has generated such unprecedented levels of revenue, and I’m delighted that she is assuming this top leadership role.”

Prior to today’s appointment, Bresnahan served as the Lottery’s Assistant Executive Director and Director of Marketing and Communications, a role in which she helped develop engaging games, promotional programs and outreach strategies that resonated with the Lottery’s players. In the last two fiscal years, the Lottery achieved its two highest annual profit levels in history, $984 million in 2012 and $956 million in 2013. Those two fiscal years also set new records for sales, with $4.741 billion being generated in 2012 and $4.850 billion being generated in 2013.

I appreciate the Treasurer’s confidence in my capabilities and am honored he has asked me to undertake this leadership role at the Lottery,” said Bresnahan. “Our team has worked to build an even more efficient and profitable business model during the last three years. I look forward to guiding the Lottery on a continued path of growth and success.”

Paul Sternburg was appointed Executive Director of the Lottery in January of 2011 when Grossman came into office. The Treasurer credited Sternburg’s leadership and sales and marketing expertise as “absolutely essential to the record-breaking success of the Lottery over the past three years,” and went on to say “as the leader of the most successful lottery in the United States, Paul has distinguished himself as one of the industry’s most imaginative and knowledgeable voices.”

Sternburg, who has 17 years of experience with state lotteries, stated that he believes “the industry is on the cusp of major innovation and change,” and that he looks forward to working with a talented industry to “leverage technology and partnerships to help deliver revenue to good causes and facilitate responsible growth.” He will continue to be based in the Boston area. “Treasurer Grossman and I built a great lottery team and we have positioned the Massachusetts Lottery as world leader; I am grateful to have served the Commonwealth and the Treasurer in this critical role,” said Sternburg.

The Massachusetts Lottery Commission was established in 1971, and its profits are the largest source of unrestricted local aid for the 351 cities and towns across the Commonwealth.

Win for Life to be Played Exclusively in Virginia Beginning with Feb. 26 Drawing

The game with the prize of a lifetime is one of Virginia’s favorites

RICHMOND, Virginia (February 25, 2014) -- It’s the game with the prize of a lifetime: Win for Life. Beginning with the February 26, drawing,

Win for Life will become a Virginia-only game.

In addition, the Virginia Lottery will begin offering top-prize winners the choice of $1,000 per week for the rest of the winner’s life or a one-time cash option of $1 million before taxes.

Win for Life has been good to Virginia Lottery players, with 44 of the 74 top-prize winners so far coming from the Commonwealth,” said Paula Otto, Executive Director of the Virginia Lottery. “We expect these changes to bring even more excitement for our players.”

Win for Life tickets still cost just $1. Players try to match six numbers to win prizes. One unusual feature of the game is that once the six winning numbers are drawn, a seventh number, called the Free Ball, is drawn. This extra number gives players a chance to increase non-jackpot prizes.

Tickets are available at all Virginia Lottery retailers.

Virginia residents can also play Win for Life with a subscription for 26, 52 or 104 advance drawings. For more information, go to

When the Win for Life game began in February of 2006, it was played in Virginia, Georgia and Kentucky. Until February 22, it was played in Virginia and Georgia.

Win for Life drawings are held Wednesday and Saturday nights at 11:00. The chances of winning the top prize are 1 in 5,245,786. Other prizes in the game range from $2 to $52,000. For streaming video of live drawings, or to view past drawings, visit

When it comes to education, the Virginia Lottery is game.  In fact, it’s the reason we play.  We generate more than $1.3 million per day for Virginia’s K-12 public schools. Operating entirely on revenue from the sale of Lottery products, the Virginia Lottery generated more than $486.5 million for Virginia’s public schools in Fiscal Year 2013. Illegal Lotteries Leaves Participants Unprotected

PRETORIA, South Africa (February 21, 2014) -- “In recent months there has been an increase in the number of illegal lotteries being advertised in the media. This leaves participants in these illegal lotteries unprotected and no guarantee that they can claim their prizes if they ‘win,’” said Prof Alfred Nevhutanda, the Chairperson of the National Lotteries Board (NLB).

The NLB is a statutory body that has been established in terms of the Lotteries Act (No. 57 of 1997) to regulate lotteries in South Africa. No one can run a lottery without having it approved and registered with the National Lotteries Board.

In terms of South African law, the following permitted lotteries must be registered in terms of lottery regulations:

  • The National Lottery, operated by a licensed operator (currently Gidani)
  • Lotteries incidental to exempt entertainment (lotteries conducted at a bazaar, sale, fete, dinner, dance, sporting event or similar events)
  • Private Lotteries (lotteries conducted in closed groups e.g. social or sporting clubs)
  • Society Lotteries (lotteries conducted by Non Profit Organisations as part of their fundraising drives)

In terms of section 56 of the Lotteries Act, no person shall conduct any competition or lottery unless authorised by the Board. Approval of the National Lotteries Board will be clearly reflected in all publicity material together with an approval number, said Prof Nevhutanda.

The Lotteries Act further states that, any person who participates in, or conducts, facilitates, promotes or derives any benefit from a lottery, not authorised by the Act, shall be guilty of an offence.

One recent lottery that has been widely advertised involves a foreign couple resident in South Africa that are running an illegal lottery where the prize on offer is a villa in a wine area of the Western Cape.

All monies paid to participate in this illegal lottery will be kept in a “Trust Account” in Austria.

This lottery is web based and all the information and buying of lots is accessible from anywhere in the world.

The NLB is of the view that this lottery constitutes an illegal lottery.

Lotteries must have a social component in order to be considered for approval by the NLB. Even when approached, under no circumstances will the NLB approve a lottery where there intention is profit for the individual or group who intends to carry out such lottery. Using the guise of a lottery for the sale of properties will not be allowed.

The NLB warns South Africans to refrain from participating in Lotteries of such nature as they remain illegal in terms of South African law. Any person convicted of an offence in terms of the Lotteries Act shall be liable to a fine or imprisonment or both a fine and imprisonment.

JEFFERSON, Missouri (February 26, 2014) -- The Missouri Lottery announced today it has agreed to extend its agreement with Arizona Gaming Designs, LLC to continue the 1-Off play type for the Pick 3 and Pick 4 games.

NASPL 2014

The latest winning numbers and jackpot information are quickly accessible and much easier to read through a pop-up window by clicking on the horn icon located on the homepage and the draw-style game detail pages. Players can also click the Winning Numbers main navigational link to see previous winning numbers.

Other highlights include an improved events calendar (under the Promotions link); a visual map-based find-a-retailer tool (Where to Play); social media share icons; one-stop-shop draw-game pages where players can learn to play, find winning numbers, check their numbers, view big winners and get answers to questions without ever leaving the page. Web video, which has become a primary web-based marketing medium, is also more seamlessly integrated and utilized within the site.

It's been about nine years since we last updated our website,” said Communications Manager Kimberly Chopin. “In that time, web technology and best practices have grown by leaps and bounds. Moving to a new website enables the Lottery to better serve our mission and our players.

Even when change is good, we know it can be hard,” Chopin added. “Frequent visitors to the site may get frustrated at first since they've grown accustomed to looking for information in certain places. We encourage players to take time to explore the changes and contact the Lottery with any questions or feedback.”

To fully experience updated features, including the site's dimensional design, mouse hovers and maps, make sure you have the most up-to-date version of your chosen web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome).

Many players like the $10 and $20 instant games because they offer the best overall odds, large top prizes, and multiple chances to win,” said Glenn Strong, the Lottery’s instant games product manager. “The strong response we’re seeing to the $2,000,000 Cash game shows that this preference holds true for our first $30 game and that players are excited about the chance to win $2 million.”

Tickets for the $2,000,000 Cash game are on sale at Lottery retailers across the state.
