Scientific Games and Hasbro Expand License Deals to Include New Channels, Brands and Territories

Agreements Include Perennial Player Favourite MONOPOLY Brand

NEW YORK and PAWTUCKET, Rhode Island (January 9, 2014) -- Scientific Games Corporation (Nasdaq: SGMS) and Hasbro, Inc. (Nasdaq: HAS) today announced the successful execution of amendments to their long-term licensing agreements.  The amended agreements provide Scientific Games with access to new channels of distribution, additional brands and extended geographic territories.

The amendments expand the existing Scientific Games lottery and WMS Gaming slot machine license agreements to expand the brands for real-money internet wagering and to now include many Hasbro brands in social casino gaming channels of distribution.

The agreements feature a number of popular Hasbro brands, including the MONOPOLY brand, one of the most well-recognized and successful licensed gaming entertainment brands in the world.  The duration of these licensing agreements has also been extended from 2017 through 2020, with a potential additional three-year extension.

"Expanding our licensing agreements and working more comprehensively with one of our most valued licensees allows us to build on our strong brand presence in the lottery and casino gaming world," said Mark Blecher, Senior Vice President, Digital Gaming and Corporate Development at Hasbro.  "We've enjoyed a long and mutually rewarding relationship with both Scientific Games and WMS and their combination presents us with exciting opportunities as we centralize key brands with one licensee across multiple gaming distribution channels."

WMS and Scientific Games have independently had portfolio licensing agreements with Hasbro since 1997 and 2003, respectively.

The MONOPOLY brand has been the number one licensed brand in the lottery industry and among the top licensed brands in slot machines during the course of these licenses.

Under the expanded license agreements, Scientific Games has secured the rights to license a number of Hasbro brands, including the MONOPOLY brand, in the real-money internet wagering and social casino gaming channels of distribution.

Scientific Games will gain access to additional Hasbro brands in these channels over the term of the agreement.  Scientific Games has also secured the rights to license seven additional Hasbro brands for its slot machine portfolio and expanded the territories for its lottery licensing rights.

"We know the importance of convergence in today's marketing environment, so we are gratified to expand our relationship with Hasbro and leverage opportunities that will arise from employing Hasbro brands with strong consumer appeal across multiple channels simultaneously," said Steve Saferin, President, Properties Group and Chief Creative Officer for Scientific Games.

"The acquisition of WMS has enabled Scientific Games to extend and expand its licenses with Hasbro and to create a one-stop solution for lottery, casino and online gaming for gaming operators."

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (January 9, 2014) – New Mexico Lottery ticket sales jumped 26 percent in December.

Preliminary gross sales for the month came to approximately $13.7 million, up from $10.8 million in December 2012.

David Barden, the New Mexico Lottery’s Interim CEO, said the December sales increase was driven by the $656 million Mega Millions® jackpot, the game’s second-largest prize ever.

Our players wanted a chance to be a part of lottery history and they rushed to stores,” Barden said.

He added that in the hours immediately preceding the Dec. 17 drawing, players across New Mexico were buying Mega Millions tickets at a rate of approximately $3,000 a minute.

$4 Million for College Scholarships

From December sales of $13.7 million, Barden said the lottery will deliver approximately

$4 million to the state’s Legislative Lottery Scholarship program, up from $3.2 million in December 2012.

Every time they buy a lottery ticket, our players help put higher education within reach of more students,” Barden said.

Illinois Lottery Will Broadcast Amber Alerts Via In-Store Monitors Throughout State

CHICAGO, Illinois (January 13, 2014) -- As the nation recognizes National AMBER Alert Awareness Day, the Illinois Lottery today announced that it will partner with state and local law enforcement agencies to provide assistance in broadcasting AMBER Alerts via the Lottery’s advertising monitors used in more than 8,200 Lottery retailers throughout the state.

Child abduction is one of the worst nightmares any family can experience. The Illinois Lottery recognizes the importance and effectiveness of the AMBER Alert system, and is honored to be able to assist throughout the state,” said Illinois Lottery Director Michael Jones.

The Illinois AMBER Alert Notification Plan is a voluntary partnership between law enforcement agencies, broadcasters, and the National Weather Service to activate urgent bulletins in the most serious child abduction cases. This is the same concept used during severe weather emergencies. The goal of the AMBER Alert is to instantly galvanize the entire community to assist in the search for and safe return of children.

Since a majority of Lottery retailers are located near highways and transportation hubs throughout the state, this vast network of retailers will greatly increase message delivery for each Alert.

During an AMBER Alert, the Illinois Lottery will:

  • Send an immediate message to approximately 8,200 Lottery retailers statewide
  • Display the message along with pictures of the abducted child (when available) on Lottery in-store display monitors statewide.
  • Feature the repeating message for 20 seconds every 60 to 90 seconds, until the alert is cancelled.

Citizens in Illinois can take pride in the fact that they can help each and every time a child is abducted by simply being aware of their surroundings and reporting what they see to law enforcement,” said Illinois AMBER Alert Coordinator Craig Burge. “This collaborative effort will continue to provide the basis for the success of AMBER Alerts for years to come, he added.

In 1996, nine-year-old Amber Hagerman was abducted while playing near her home in Arlington, Texas, and murdered. In response to community concern, the Texas Association of Radio Managers, with the assistance of Texas’ local area law enforcement, created the first AMBER Plan. All fifty states now have similar plans. Since the program’s inception, over 670 abducted children across the country have been safely recovered as a direct result of AMBER Alerts.

If you have any questions or need any additional information, please visit the AMBER Alert website at or call the Illinois Clearinghouse for Missing Children at 1-800-843-5763 (1-800 U HELP ME).

Eastern Iowa Barbershop Quartet Stars in New Lottery Commercials

Members Are From Cedar Rapids, Marion, Iowa City and Blairstown

DES MOINES, Iowa (January 13, 2014) -- A men's barbershop quartet from eastern Iowa has a starring role in commercials running statewide to promote four new Iowa Lottery games.

The television and radio spots, which started airing Monday, feature the SwitchBack quartet on stage, smiling broadly and singing to the camera. The members of the quartet, outfitted in eye-catching silver jackets, sing a harmonic jingle about the lottery's "Make My Day™," "Make My Week™," "Make My Month™," and "Make My Year™" instant-scratch games.

SwitchBack's members are: John Hayden from Blairstown, Lee Thomsen from Marion, Erik Sherard from Cedar Rapids and Terry Blessing from Iowa City. All four have collegiate singing experience, three are members of the Harmony Hawks Barbershop Chorus in Cedar Rapids, and two are music educators in school districts in Linn and Benton counties.

The group was formed in late fall 2012 when Hayden, Thomsen and Sherard needed a substitute to complete their quartet. Blessing joined the group, the other men switched parts to accommodate the new voice and that's how the name "SwitchBack" was born.

"That's part of the source of our name," Thomsen said. "SwitchBack is this switching around."

SwitchBack was chosen by a selection committee for the lottery spots from many video and audio files featuring quartets from across the state. The commercials were produced by a music arranger, an advertising agency and production studios based in Iowa.

Teri Wood, the lottery's vice president of marketing, said the mid-December commercial production with SwitchBack progressed quickly.

"They just nailed the song in the script and that really helped keep things moving," she said. "It was a fun session. We're always glad when we can showcase local Iowa talent in our ads."

The lottery spots are the group's first commercial appearance.

"Now we can say we're studio recording artists," Hayden said with a smile.

Thomsen, 31, sings bass in the lottery's production. He is a music teacher at Starry Elementary School in the Marion Independent School District and an assistant director of the Harmony Hawks.

Sherard, 31, the baritone voice in the lottery's production, said that even though the group has only been singing together for about a year, a strong friendship has developed amongst SwitchBack's members and their families.

"I like the sound and the brotherhood of being with just four guys in a quartet setting," he said. "You become really close."

Sherard said he thinks that participating in the lottery advertising campaign will bring recognition to the group.

"It's fun to see and be part of the process," he said. "We've never done that before."

Hayden, 43, sings lead in the lottery's production. He teaches choral music in the Benton Community School District and directs the Harmony Hawks Barbershop Chorus. He said he enjoys the challenge of a cappella singing.

"If it's not good, it's bad; that's the thing with barbershop," he said. "You either make that a cappella sound work or it's not there."

Blessing, 30, who sings tenor in the lottery's production, said that family, jobs, and other commitments make it difficult for SwitchBack to rehearse more than three or four times a month, but each quartet member works individually to master their voice part.

"With only four there's nowhere to hide," he said. "You have to know your stuff."

SwitchBack participated in a regional barbershop quartet competition in Kansas City, Mo., this past fall and hopes to qualify in April for an international competition scheduled this summer in Las Vegas.

The lottery's new Make My Day™, Make My Week™, Make My Month™ and Make My Year™ scratch games hit the market Monday. The group of tickets has a similar look, feel and gameplay, but varies in size, cost and prizes offered. The price point and top prize increase with the length of time indicated in the game's name. For example, players can win up to $5,000 playing the $1 Make My Day™ game, but can win up to $100,000 playing the $10 Make My Year™ game. Players scratch the "stars" in the playing area on each ticket and match game symbols to win prizes.

More dollars will go to fund educational programs in Georgia than ever before as a result of our strong start to the fiscal year,” said Georgia Lottery President and CEO Debbie D. Alford. “We are proud of our accomplishments and remain committed to maximizing revenues to benefit Georgia’s students.”
